WATER FILTRATION PROJECT

Our Water Filtration Team piloted a biosand filtration device that will utilize locally available and affordable supplies to naturally sanitize contaminated water. With layers of sand and rock, the biased filter develops a biological-layer that will trap bacteria and dispense potable water.

Since August of 2014, we have introduced the BSF design in technical and educational workshops to the community of Naluja. Each summer, for two to three weeks, the travel team has been able to educate over 1,500 people. Moreover, by forming Water Committees in each of Naluja’s five zones, the education effort for sanitation continues to grow. These committee opportunities are also specifically designed to empower female leadership in Naluja.  As of 2017, the project has been implemented and EWB-BU continues to monitor and improve upon the filters that are already in place. We are assessing the project from quantitative data as reported by our community.
