Rainwater harvesting PROJECT

Over the six year partnership of the chapter with the community of Naluja, the one dire need that the community has constantly expressed is of access to a reliable source of clean, drinking water. This project specifically aims to address those needs in the local school, which is regularly attended by 700 students and dozens of support staff. The nearest source of drinking water is the hand pump located 1 kilometer away from the clinic. Water testing done by the chapter has revealed the presence of coliform and other fecal bacteria in that water source, yet hundreds of children continue to rely on that pump as their source of drinking water. This has led to a prevalence of as cholera, hepatitis, typhoid and diarrheal diseases among these children. While parents and teachers are left to wonder why their children are constantly getting sick, nothing is being done to address the potential source of this disease. The rainwater collection system promises to address these immediate needs in the community by providing a reliable source of drinking water. Rainwater has been proven to be much safer than groundwater in these areas and the built-in functionalities of the rainwater harvesting system work to filter out many of the contaminants that otherwise go unfiltered and lead to students falling sick and a decline in regular school attendance.

This project is our current focus in 2017 and will soon be implemented.

DRILLING TO CLEAN WATER

The community members in Naluja place much trust in deep wells and boreholes. Water testing done by the chapter has revealed the presence of coliform and other fecal bacteria in that water source. Moreover, these wells are sparse and often dry up during the latter part of the dry season.
